    What is ChatGPT & Should it be Used for SEO?

    The new OpenAI tool, ChatGPT, has taken the world by storm. It was released on the 30th of November 2022 and reached 1 million users by the 5th of December. Although there is a lot of hype around the tool and it’s potential impact on digital marketing, there are a few things to consider before making ChatGPT a go to tool.

    Why You Shouldn’t Use ChatGPT for SEO

    It is widely recognised that you can be penalised for using AI generated content on your website by the search engines. John Muller was quoted saying;

    “Content generated automatically using AI writing tools violates Google’s Webmaster Guidelines” – English Google SEO office-hours from April 1, 2022

    Adhering to Google’s Webmaster Guidelines is a fundamental to achieving sustainable SEO results, this is because you will be using techniques that fit in with Google’s expectations. If your website is found to be violating Google’s Webmaster Guidelines, then your website could face one of the following punishments:

    • Lower ranking in search engines
    • Lowering traffic
    • Losing customer trust-

    In the worst-case scenario, the particular page that contains AI content will not be indexed, in some extreme cases, the whole website can be de-indexed by Google. If your website is completely de-indexed then it is virtually impossible to generate high levels of organic traffic.

    Along with the technical considerations for why you shouldn’t use ChatGPT for your content is because it doesn’t know your audience. Making customers feel like the content is directed at them is a great way of keeping people engaged & generating new customers. At the moment, AI tools cannot be as personable as humans. While this may change in the future it is currently a big drawback for ChatGPT.

    When Should You Use ChatGPT

    Whilst you should not use it for content you are looking to put directly on your site, it can still be very helpful to people within the SEO industry

    You could look to take advantage of ChatGPT to summarise large articles down to their main talking points. This can save you time & makes information much easier to read & understand. It would be beneficial to put an article you wrote into ChatGPT to see what it determines as the main talking points, simply put ‘summarise this article for me’ & paste it into your article.

    Another way digital marketers should be looking to use ChatGPT is to create scripts for speeches, talks or webinars. If you have some points that you want to present to a large audience then simply enter your talking points into ChatGPT and request ‘turn my notes into a speech for a large audience.’ Additionally, you can specify what audience it is you will be presenting to. If you are presenting to an audience that has good of knowledge on your topic then you can request that your speech sounds more professional, alternatively, if it’s an audience with little to no information on your chosen topic then you can ask for it to be less complicated & complex.

    We have been testing ChatGPT with a number of content applications including social posts. For example, when I requested ‘Create a LinkedIn post that is informing people of a job vacancy for an SEO manager’ it returned;

    Attention all job seekers!

    We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced SEO manager to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing effective SEO strategies to drive traffic, improve search rankings, and increase overall online visibility for our company.

    The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of SEO best practices and experience managing SEO campaigns for multiple websites. They will also have excellent communication and project management skills, as well as the ability to analyse and report on data.

    If you have a passion for SEO and are looking for a new challenge, we encourage you to apply. This is a full-time position with competitive benefits.

    #SEO #SEOmanager #jobvacancy #hiring”

    While this isn’t perfect, it provides a great starting point for us to apply our own tone and personality.

    Summary on ChatGPT

    While ChatGPT is without a doubt, a revolutionary tool for many industries, particularly digital marketing. However, it should not be used for unfiltered direct content creation as part of your SEO strategy. The content outputs are an excellent start point that can save time on research and writing time, but need the human filter and personality.  If you are looking for a team of highly skilled digital marketing professionals to write content for your site, then get in touch with us today.
